Green Communication Institute Executive Director, Mr. Maricus Agutu, is the new head of the Nairobi Metropolitan region team, which will coordinate the activities of the Kenya Platform for Climate Governance (KPCG).
In this capacity, Mr. Agutu joins a team of coordinators representing the nine regions across Kenya, who are identified as focal points for KPCG’s climate justice and climate action agenda in the country.
During the KPCG Special General Members Meeting held at Rainbow Ruiru Resort in Thika, Kiambu County, on September 24th – 26th, 2025, the Members officially established the Subnational Regional Coordination Mechanism, described as a cornerstone of the “KPCG (2025–2028) Strategy.”
Host organizations for regional KPCG coordinating teams were also identified in all nine regions across the country, effectively cascading the platform’s presence to the grassroots in line with Kenya’s vision for effective, locally led climate actions.
Additionally, leaders of KPCG’s thematic areas were also identified and mandated to develop strategies relevant to their respective agendas.
This Subnational Regional Coordination Mechanism and Framework will:
- Strengthen county and inter-county climate governance.
- Mobilize members and communities for climate justice.
- Enhance access to climate finance & fundraising.
- Support documentation and reporting of progress.
- Anchor and promote locally led climate action and resilience action.
Speaking during the Special General Members Meeting, Ms. Faith Ngige, the KPCG National Coordinator, stated that the team played a critical role in driving the KPCG climate agenda across Kenya.
“We congratulate all the Regional Coordination Focal Points, Host Organizations, and Thematic Leads who have stepped up to serve. Your leadership is key in bringing the KPCG Strategy 2025–2028 to life.
By anchoring climate action closer to communities, these platforms will be engines of advocacy, innovation & resilience—ensuring that Kenya’s NDC commitments are driven from the ground up,” Ms. Ngige added.
The meeting also saw the organizations adopt key governance instruments of membership, alongside a renewed commitment to climate justice and sustainable development for Kenya and beyond.
KPCG, the local national arm of the Nairobi-based Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), brings together all civil society organizations advocating for Climate Justice Policies and locally-led climate actions across Kenya.
PACJA is a consortium of more than 2000 organizations from 54 African countries that brings together a diverse membership drawn from grassroots, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, trusts, foundations, indigenous communities, farmers and pastoralist groups with a shared vision to advance a people-centered, right-based, just and inclusive approach to address climate and environmental challenges facing humanity and the planet.
